Passo Dello Stelvio (Adobe Photoshop, 18" x 30") Located in Northern Italy at an altitude of 2757 m (9,045 ft), the Stelvio is the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps and the second highest in the Alps. 1871 m (6,138 ft) covers the entire climb, bottom to top. It's almost like having Mount Washington in New Hampshire as either an intermediate climb or a finishing climb in an otherwise 100+ mile bike race. Brutal. The Stelvio was first introduced into the Giro D'Italia in 1953 when Fausto Coppi beat Hugo Koblet for the top spot on the podium. Since then, it's been used 12 times in the Giro, including 4 summit finishes. With 27 switchbacks, it is the highest finish of any Grand Tour.
